Accoya®: The High-Performance Wood That’s Redefining Your Projects

Imagine a wood species as beautiful as it is durable, as stable as it is high-performing, able to withstand even the harshest climates without compromising its visual appeal. That wood is Accoya®.

Imagine a wood species as beautiful as it is durable, as stable as it is high-performing, able to withstand even the harshest climates without compromising its visual appeal.

That wood is Accoya®.

Thanks to a simple yet innovative transformation technology—acetylation—this modified wood pushes the limits of what natural materials can do. Stronger than exotic hardwoods and more eco-friendly than synthetic alternatives, Accoya® has quickly become the go-to choice for architects, designers, and builders seeking a reliable and sustainable solution.

In this article, discover what makes Accoya® so unique: its origin, manufacturing process, performance features, certifications, and diverse applications.

A Responsible Origin, Engineered to Last

Accoya® is made from sustainably grown radiata pine from New Zealand, certified by the FSC®. The wood is then transformed through acetylation, an innovative chemical process that works at the molecular level. Unlike traditional pressure treatments that only coat the wood, acetylation changes its internal structure, dramatically enhancing its performance.

Acetylation: A Deep Structural Transformation

The process utilizes an organic compound, acetic anhydride, which is activated by heat and pressure. This reaction increases the wood’s natural acetyl molecule concentration while reducing hydroxyl groups, which are responsible for moisture-induced swelling and shrinking.

By-products such as acetic acid are captured and reused in other industries or recycled for the next production cycle. The result is a non-toxic, chemical-free, and 100% recyclable wood.

Performance That Makes a Difference

Dimensional Stability

Accoya® resists swelling and shrinking, making it an ideal choice for exterior joinery, such as doors and windows. It holds its shape, even under extreme humidity fluctuations.

Exceptional Durability

Independent tests conducted in the Netherlands by the SHR Institute over a 15- to 20-year period show that acetylated wood performs as well as, or better than, tropical hardwoods in wet, ground-contact environments. It’s approved for both above-ground and direct ground or freshwater contact.

Superior Finish Longevity

Accoya® can be painted, stained, or oiled with most standard systems (water- or oil-based paints, stains, etc.). Thanks to its stability, it finishes last two to three times longer than on non-modified wood.

UV Resistance

Even when left untreated, Accoya® weathers naturally to a beautiful silver-grey patina, while maintaining its structural integrity. With proper care, it also retains its original look longer than traditional wood species.

Certifications and Environmental Commitments

Accoya® checks every box for responsible construction.

  • FSC® certified: sourced from sustainably managed forests.
  • LEED® compliant: contributes to U.S. Green Building Council credits.
  • North American certifications:
    • ICC ESR-2825 (above- and below-ground applications)
    • WDMA IS 4 (Hallmark-certified windows and doors)
    • AWPA E7 and E10

Accoya® in the Field: A Proven Material

In the United States, Accoya® is already widely used for exterior siding, decking, and joinery. Many manufacturers are turning to acetylated wood as a replacement for exotic or chemically treated species.

Ready to Make the Switch to Accoya®?

With Accoya®, you get the natural beauty and warmth of wood, the performance of a next-generation material, and a genuine commitment to sustainability. It’s the ideal solution for all your exterior or premium projects—whether in architecture, design, or construction.
